Double Glazed Windows - Helping You Reduce Your Energy Consumption and Living Costs

The cost of living today is much higher than it used to be. People all around the world are trying to find ways to cut costs and whilst many methods are found, there are a number of other options that many home owners haven't touched on. Keeping the home warm in winter and cool in summer can be an expensive exercise. A large number of home owners are moving away from fan heaters and bar heaters, which have always been considered among the most expensive methods of heating the home.

Open fires, oil heaters and even timer-controlled under floor heating are all very popular ways in which to stay warm and comfortable when the weather is cold. However there are other ways in which to cut costs and also protect the interests of the environment. Double glazed windows are an extremely effective way of saving energy and living costs.

Double glazing is a great way to conserve heat and ensures that any heat produced in the home is kept in the home and doesn't escape through gaps, which can often be found in old timber windows. Having that extra layer of glass is like having two pairs of gloves on - adds extra warmth and comfort.

With double glazed windows, the air is trapped between the two thick panes of glass, unlike a single pane window which is more susceptible to the poor weather. Although costly to install, once you've got them, you'll realise just how much of a difference they make. They'll not only keep you warm in winter, but also due to their unique structure, they'll also keep you cool in winter.

Obtaining Privacy Using Bamboo Shades

Homeowners are increasingly moving to more thoughtful consideration of their window treatments. This is partly driven by the need to save expenses. However, there is a stronger driving force, which is the available options, as well as the increasingly diverse consumer needs for their window treatments. Privacy and light control are part of the decision-making process when choosing bamboo shades. Another element to consider when buying these products is how they will add to your decor. Bamboo shades are attractive and good for privacy, as long as you educate yourself about how to choose the right ones. This article will only address the privacy aspects of bamboo shades.

When people live near others, privacy in the home becomes a concern. Our home is our haven, requiring security and privacy from the outside world. When privacy is an issue, bamboo shades make an elegant choice for a window covering. You can cover more than 95% of your window with attractive materials, giving you security that's aesthetically pleasing. If you set up the bamboo shade correctly, you'll have almost total privacy. This can rest our minds with the peaceful enjoyment of our spaces, while still allowing a beautiful décor style.

Privacy can be compromised if the bamboo shade doesn't cover the whole window, from top to bottom or side to side. An outside mounted bamboo shade that extends several inches wider than the window will offer more privacy. Keep in mind, however, that an outside mount bamboo shade typically hangs an inch or two in front of the window, so anyone can see past the sides. To prevent prying eyes, order bamboo shades that are six inches wider than the window, so they extend three inches out on the sides. Larger bamboo shades also give the appearance of larger windows. Thus, while keeping outsiders from seeing our inside secrets, those in the rooms, those who are welcome that is, can see the beauty of the large windows, and the wonderful splash of design on your spaces.

Selection of the correct fabric will ensure maximum privacy. Bamboo has such a diversity of design, and this is where many homeowners may feel lost or uncomfortable. It is quite simple, however. Overlapping sticks are a big help when it comes to privacy. The separation between slats may vary according to the patterns chosen. Most people have found that this is not an issue. But if it is, bamboo shades that are made with overlapping sticks provide more privacy and security. To make sure of this, look at the material to make sure it overlaps and doesn't have large gaps.

Buy lined shades to get the most privacy from your bamboo shades. Lining your shades will guarantee that the naturally occurring gaps will be concealed. When purchasing lined bamboo shades, look for those designated "outside mount." Using lined shades, the entire window opening will be covered by the window treatment, which will also block the light and give much greater privacy. Among the benefits of lining your bamboo shades is that the patterns show up beautifully. Lined bamboo shades give you a lot of control over the light levels in the room, even offering complete darkness when desired.

Bamboo shades can enhance your living area, adding beauty and privacy. The right bamboo shade can give you the beauty you desire while keeping your beautiful views available when you want them. When selecting bamboo shades, you will want to make sure the shades provide privacy and security. Bamboo shades are great for making your home more private and secure; just be sure to pick the right patterns, measure and install them correctly, and decide on lined vs. unlined. Making the right choice will provide beauty, privacy, and a lot more.

Bamboo Window Shades - 5 Important Things to Be Aware Of

Buying bamboo window shades seems like a very easy thing to do. However there are many factors that need to be considered including privacy, light control, design aesthetic, size, and price. Don't worry though; we'll go over each one of these categories and help highlight things to look out for.

1. Privacy

This is one of the main reasons people look into blinds. Bamboo roll up blinds are very popular for example, but offer only the position of up or down and because of their construction offer slightly less privacy.

Slat style blinds are a better choice if you are looking for complete privacy. They look very similar to the standard plastic mini blinds, but with slightly thicker and wider slats.

TIP: If you're running low on cash get blinds for the bathrooms and bedrooms first. These rooms usually require the largest amount of privacy.

2. Light Control

Reduce glare on the Television Lower or raise the brightness of a room, especially if you work third shift and need to sleep during the brightest time of the day UV rays that can fade and damage furniture and artwork
TIP: Pay close attention to what style of bamboo window blinds you get, some help block out the sun better than others.

3. Design Aesthetic

The fun part about picking out bamboo window shades! Matching your blinds to the other colors in your home can be a tricky task, especially if you've got other shades of brown in the home. Most online companies that sell blinds do a great job of photographing them and the colors you see should be very close to the actual product. If you are worried about color, feel free to give them a call, they will be happy to help.

Texture - Don't forget the roll texture and pattern plays in the overall look of your room.
Have Fun - Remember to relax and enjoy designing your room and matching the blinds to it. Get your friends involved for opinions.
TIP: If you have a paint color sample or fabric swatch from your furniture, bring it along. It's amazing how the color we thought our couch or walls were if so far off.

4. Size

Finding the right size blinds won't be a problem as blind manufacturers make a large variety of sizes, but measuring properly for the blinds is a completely different story.

TIP 1: When measuring the height of the window and comparing it to available sizes, going one size up is always a good idea. The reason being if you measured a little off and got an exact size, it might be to short which defeats the purpose all together, but blinds that are a little to long hide nicely stacked at the bottom. This leads us to tip number 2.

TIP 2: The same rule applies for measuring the width of the window. If you measure just the width from edge to edge of the glass and don't include any of the window trim you might end up with blinds that are to narrow. A good rule of thumb is to include the width of the glass and window trim in the overall width measurement. It will still fit nicely between the window casings.

5. Price

How expensive a particular item is can be very subjective. While some people would have no problem paying over $500 for bamboo window shades, others might have a budget of $500 for their entire home. Luckily they come in a wide range of prices to fit everyone budget.

After some quick research I found prices ranging from as low as $14.99 all the way to $650.00. The average price seemed to be around $40-$60 though. Don't be afraid to shop around and find what fits your budget!

Hopefully the next time you go shopping for bamboo window shades you'll be a much more informed shopper. The best advice I can give you is to never be afraid to ask questions. The people you will be buying from are most likely experts in their field and would love to share their knowledge with you.

Blinds

Windows are an essential part of any home, office or any building because they allow natural light to come inside. Apart from that, windows enable us to look outside without actually having to leave home. However, there are times when there can be too much light coming in at a certain time of the day, and other times when we need privacy; hence, the need to cover the window. This is when blinds come into play.

Blinds have become increasingly popular compared to curtains, especially in offices and public buildings. Blinds are the best choice because they give the best overall coverage and protection, come in various styles and colors, and can be made to fit all size of windows. Blinds also last longer than any fabric material, are easier to clean, easy to maintain and, most importantly, they can protect your furniture and carpet from the bright ultraviolet light of the sun.

To get your money's worth, do not settle for second-rate blinds. Getting blinds is an investment; they should last until you get tired of them or until they have worn out beyond their years. Getting the right blinds to suit your taste is also important, because they are going to be 'hanging' around for awhile. Blinds should also be easy to handle, which means opening and closing them should be a breeze.

You will be dazzled by your choices when you are actually on the hunt for the perfect blinds, as there are literally hundreds of different styles and colors to pick from, ranging from simple to exotic and funky. Whatever you fancy, choose the blinds that best suit your home or wherever you intend to place them, and make sure the color is also in perfect coordination with the color of the walls and tiles. The following are types of blinds you can choose from:

--Vertical window blinds - these may not be the best choice of blinds because they can easily break if not handled carefully, and changing them can also be a bit troublesome. However, they are still widely used because they are a cheaper alternative and e

--Plantation shutter window blinds - newly constructed homes now have opted for this kind of blinds as a standard choice because they are easy to clean and gives a homely touch. The only drawback is that to open them all the way you need to stand clear;

--Roman shade window blinds - these are great since they come in various fabrics and styles, but lack in 100% protection. They do not block out enough light, as we would like, especially in more private rooms like the bedroom.

If you are thinking of purchasing blinds remember to look for the kind of material you would like, whether it be wood, plastic or bamboo, and also if you would prefer the cords or cordless types.

Patio Door Window Treatments

Sliding glass patio doors are a wonderful idea, they create a sense of extra space by bringing your patio and backyard inside. Plus they can be a great source for sunlight. But you probably don't want your view open all the time, so window treatments are often needed for the times when you do need privacy, light control and even insulation.

Patio door window treatments can be a challenge, so here are a few expert suggestions. The traditional choice would be vertical blinds or curtains on a traverse rod, which emphasize the dramatic dimensions of your patio door while providing complete privacy and light control. Aluminum, vinyl or cloth vertical blinds come in any color-matching them to standard horizontal blinds on your other windows is a good idea-and can provide a chic, modern accent for any room. Vertical blinds also come in faux wood, which is a good match with wood or composite blinds. Another interesting option you might want to consider are ceiling mount verticals, which would eliminate a potentially annoying gap between the ceiling and the door frame.

There's also Levolor's exclusive BackStacker feature that keeps sometimes-unruly vertical vanes neatly and discretely stacked when open. Another consideration is insulation. Glass patio doors offer a lot of surface area for cold air to get in, and investing in either vertical cellular shades or heavy insulated curtains is an easy way to save on your heating bill.

But if you're in the market for patio door window treatments and vertical shades just aren't your thing, don't worry, you've still got options. Sliding panel track blinds are a novel offering now available in a wide range of materials from natural wovens to fabric to solar screens. As an aside, panel track blinds can also be used as a decorative room divider. You can also consider using multiple horizontal window blinds or shades to cover the area: splitting the shades per-pane (i.e. two if it's a full-glass sliding door) allows you to independently control your two shades. For example, the stationary shade can be lowered while the access shade is raised. In this situation, solar shades are an intriguing option, they'll screen out glare and UV rays while keeping your picture window view, and they're available in a wide range of patterns to compliment any interior environment.

If you are considering measuring and installing your vertical blinds or curtains, I would recommend utilizing the various "how to measure and install window blinds" videos available on websites like You Tube. The advantage of doing it yourself is predominantly cost savings. It easier than you might think.

Also, if you haven't checked out the various online retailers of window treatments, you may want to do some poking around on the internet. The major advantage of purchasing online is selection. Most of the top internet retailers offer the top brands, like Hunter Douglas, Levolor, Bali, Graber Comfortex and Kirsch, at discount prices. If you are like me and have trouble buying without seeing, you can go to a traditional brick and mortar store. You can purchase your window treatments there or take the information back to your online search armed with more specific information.

How to Make Roman Shades

Roman shades are a simple and elegant window treatment to block the sun or prying neighbors. Nicer than plain plastic shades, but less expensive than ornate window shades, Roman shades provide the perfect start to a beginning home decorator.

Roman shades can be purchased from home improvement or department stores, or they can be custom made by in interior designer. The cheapest way to decorate your home with Roman shades is to make them yourself. Get ready to refresh your math skills!

To make Roman shades, first measure the window you'd like to put them in. Measure the height and width of the window from inside its frame. Or, if you want the shade to cover more than the window, measure the height and width of the surface the shade will cover. Your shade will probably need to be between 45 and 54 inches wide.

Before you shop for your fabric, you'll need to calculate the number of dowels and the amount of fabric you'll need. To figure out how many dowels you will need, divide the window height by six to nine inches, which will be the space between each dowel fold. You'll need to find a number that goes evenly into your window height. For example, if your window height is 64 inches, divide by six. You'll then need eight dowels for eight pleats. Each dowel needs 1.5 inches, so multiplied by eight, you'll need an extra 12 inches of fabric. You'll also need an extra six inches of fabric to mount the shade, meaning you'll need 18 extra inches for this example. Add this to your window height to get your final height. Add two inches of fabric to your window width. Now you have the size of the fabric you need. Whew!

Next, the fun part: selecting the fabric of your shade. Shades without busy patterns are the easiest to work with because you won't need to make sure the pattern blends seamlessly with each fold. If your window gets southern light, consider picking a near-shear fabric. This will produce a warm, soothing light in your room. Take a picture or your room, fabric swatches of your furniture, and a paint sample of your room when you shop. You don't want to finish making your Roman shade to discover it clashes with the rest of your room!

While you are out buying your fabric, buy the rest of your supplies:

Drapery-lining fabric. You'll need an extra 0.25 inches to cover the mounting board.

Blind cord

Window cleat

Quarter-inch diameter window dowels, 0.25 inches smaller than the window width

A wooden mounting board, 0.25 inches smaller than the window width that's 1x2 inches.

Half-inch diameter shade rings

Screw eyes

Staple gun

Chalk or air-soluble marker

Yardstick

The easiest way to make a shade uses lots of pictures and few words. Find instructions at a home improvement store or for free online to make your own Roman shade. Find patterns that make the type of Roman shade you want, whether it is flat, pleated, or with a sunburst. You'll probably need a sewing machine to make the Roman shade quickly, especially to attach the lining to the fabric. With patience you can make your own Roman shade.

Roman Blinds Come in Many Fabrics

Your imagination and the depth of texture that might compromise the way they hang or the way they fold up are probably the only limits to them. A flat surfaced fabric without pleating or a loose free texture best serves the design of Roman blinds. Silks, linens, cotton, suede, leather, plastic, PVC and other man made fabrics can all be used for making Roman blinds. Special weaves like damask, jacquard and even a light brocade can provide texture and pattern to designs that compliment your other soft furnishings in the room.

Being a rectangle with horizontal folds, crisp lines suit the integral design of the blinds most; floppiness or over-fussiness detract from their simplicity. However, patterns and weaves can make even these simple blinds works of art and allow you to express your creativity through colors and prints. Roman blinds can even be made from bamboo and jute too if you wish to follow a natural 'woody' theme in your rooms.

If you decide to use a patterned fabric for your blinds it might be worth looking at the effect when the blinds are folded up - there may be a predominance of a particular color that does not give the effect you want. Strategic positioning of the rods will give you options regarding the dominant color that would be displayed when the blinds are folded up. It's a bit like taking into consideration the repeat pattern when you are wallpapering a surface; you have to allow for matching up the pattern.

Similarly with Roman blinds you have to take into account the repeat pattern as it will appear if you feel very strongly about the color you wish displayed. Most people are quite happy with the configuration but if you are making up a blind yourself from a kit you are obviously interested in having the desired finish that will blend with your decor and the color palette of your room. A little extra material, perhaps with a full repeat, should allow you to play about with where the rods need to be placed for the pattern to be shown in its best way for you.

Plain fabrics are the simplest to use, as there is no pattern to consider so bearing this in mind you might be able to afford a slightly more expensive fabric, as there will be no waste or loss when the blind is made up. Velcro attachments on the head rail make removal of the blinds easy to clean. Dusting and vacuuming will probably refresh your blinds best and won't compromise the integrity of the fabric but if you do need to 'wash' them you must take into account the manufacturer's care instructions.

Gently sponging with a clean and damp, not wet, cloth should remove any light dirt and certain fabrics can cope with a swish in a bath of water. Many have wipeable surfaces that can be swiped over with the blinds in situ so they don't even have to be removed from their fixings.

Creating a Unique Style With a Roman Blinds

Roman blinds have a simple shape of a flat fabric panel corded vertically to pleat into neat horizontal folds. These offer versatility in a beautiful and practical way. They are best suited for practical areas such as kitchens, bathrooms and hallways that require light to filter into the room or to be blocked out completely. Operating the blinds is quite easy. You can pull them all the way to the top to allow maximum light into the room or you can leave them cascading for a stylish effect. They also have a slim line form, which makes it ideal for them to sit inside or outside the window alcove. This translates to less room needed for the window dressing. Hence, roman blinds are perfect for small or confined areas.

Roman blinds normally have simple shapes. This leaves great potential for creativity with other kinds of window dressing. These are best made from dense fabrics such as faux suede, linen, calico or leather although other fabric can still be used. Choice of fabric is very important since it will influence the blind style. Factors to consider include transparency, texture, color and pattern. They also differ in design therefore, you need to consider your window style before making your choice.

For most rooms the modern bamboo roman blind design is appropriate as a minimalist and stylish dressing. You can also choose vibrant and rich patterned fabric to create a statement. Indeed, there is no limit when it comes to roman blind styles. You can also opt for an ornate or eastern twist for your blinds. This can be done by adding beads, tassels or fringing to the blind tail. You can also have a band or border added to the blind from a contrasting fabric, which will help build interest and style. Use contrasting shades or textures for this to be more stylish. The band can also duplicate other patterns or fabrics used in the room for a unifying feel. The blind tail used should also reflect creativity. You can use the simple horizontal edge, fan, curve or embossed detail.

Roman blinds leave enough space for further window dressing. The blinds can be used as practical yet modest window cover, which allows you to be more creative with the other window features. This means the window can still be dressed with full curtains with added swag and tail draped all-round the pole for an elaborate design. With such an arrangement, it is not necessary to move the curtains to allow light into the room. Roman blinds are available in various designs, styles and fabrics. You can also customize your own blinds. All you need is a roman blind kit, which comes with all the fixtures and mechanisms needed to customize the blinds. It also helps you in the selection of accessories and fabrics.

The Different Types of Roman Blinds

If you're looking for sophistication and elegance you'll find it with roman blinds. These blinds are popularly made from fabric and they come in a variety of color, design, texture and size depending on what you want. If you do not want the trouble that comes with installing heavy draperies or curtains, roman blinds are the best option for you and your home.

A roman blind is versatile when it comes to adding style to your house. A simple patterned blind will make a simple accent piece while a heavily patterned one will make a statement. Light and soft fabrics provide a summer feel and a blind that comes in warm colors can give a fuzzy warm feeling to your home which is perfect for those cooler months.

According to Blind Shape

Roman blinds have flat panels that extend all the way downward. There are two types of blinds, according to the shape or the fold that you can see when you draw up the blinds. The first, more common style folds straight when lowered and neatly folds up when pulled up, where it lies flat. The second style of Roman blind is a teardrop shape. This blind doesn't lie flat when you pull it up but rather it has a curved or cuffed hem. It makes a loop or teardrop shape when drawn up. I prefer this style, especially for a bedroom or living room, as it gives the room a softer and more elegant appearance. This style needs a more flimsy or fine material than the regular classic type.

According to Color

You may match your blinds with the style and interior of your room. As the blinds are available in all colors it is easy to mix and match.

According to Texture

Blinds are available in many different fabrics: from canvas, denim, soft fabric, flimsy, wispy, denim and leather, even satin. The texture of the fabric depends on what type of look you want to achieve. A softer texture is required for a teardrop style; a stiffer fabric texture is needed to provide you with a stiff horizontal style.

Some Drawbacks

A roman blind isn't for every home. It may be inappropriate if you have a rustic home which will look better with a wooden venetian blind. They're also not that convenient for covering wide windows such as using them for conservatory blinds, as they're difficult to pull up. In that situation, you may want to buy two blinds and mount them side by side, for ease of use.

Animals on the Move

Some animals are constantly on the move, whether in the continual search for food or territory, or as part of a seasonal migration. This year, because of the intervention of wildlife conservationists, there are some animals on the move for very different reasons.

The Panda Express

A giant panda named Tai Shan made the news in February 2010 when he emigrated from the USA to China. He was moved from the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC to join a breeding programme run by wildlife conservation experts at the Bifengxia Panda Base in Ya'an, Sichuan. Tai Shan's intercontinental blind date and breeding plan is so high profile that he has even attracted a sponsorship deal from a car company.

A special FedEx plane was chartered to transport him and a panda called Mei Lan, from a zoo in Atlanta, to China, a journey taking fifteen hours. On the flight, dubbed "the Panda Express", were about 18 kilos of bamboo, pears and apples to keep him occupied. He was not anaesthetized for the journey because expert wildlife conservationists allowed him to get used to his cubicle long before it was time to leave. He will be given a month to settle in before he is introduced to the Chinese public.

Tai Shan was born in America in July 2005 to Chinese parents. He is the first cub that the zoo has successfully raised to this stage of maturity. Scientists used artificial insemination in his conception with the help of Chinese zoologists who loaned his parents to the U.S. for that purpose. As part of the project, it was negotiated with the China Wildlife Conservation Association that he would stay for a term of about two years, but he proved so popular in America that his residency was extended for a further two years.

It appears that he will be fondly missed; to coincide with the panda's departure, the zoo has launched a series of postage stamps bearing his image, the proceeds from which will go towards wildlife conservation projects like the one that has made Tai Shan headline news.

Monkey Business

About 450 km to the East of Tai Shan's new home is Chongqing Zoo, where you can also find pandas. Chongqing Zoo looks after a number of endangered species such as Great and Lesser pandas and South China Tigers, which are being monitored and bred as part of wildlife conservation programmes. But in the first week of February 2010, it was not the protected animals that caught the attention of the visiting crowds, but those that escaped the protection of their enclosures and made a break for freedom.

Somehow, a few of the zoo's more mischievous monkeys climbed out of their enclosure. The absconding primates wasted no time in causing a commotion, grabbing food from the hands of zoo-goers and running amok, even paying visits to the pens and cages of neighbouring animals. Tourists reported that they saw monkeys plucking an unfortunate peacock and topping up the fish pond with monkey urine. At the time of writing, it is not known whether they have been caught yet.

What Is Money?

I want more; this desire comes to our mind, when we hear this word. This is not only a word for many of us, but a complete sentence of their life or the meaning of life is this and only this. We can go to any extent to get more money for us, irrespective the way we adopt. It makes us mad, it makes us sad and happy too, with the different phases of our life and we keep on running behind this, for this, till the end of our life.

We travel a lot we go to any part of the world, we kill our health and we kill others too, for only this. From the start of the life till the end of the life, we come across only this. So, you can say all the definition starts from you and ends at money because relation, friendship, love, your work, desires, everywhere money is involved. You are good for your relation if you are wealthy, you are a good friend of mine, because you are rich, you are my first and last love because you spend much on me, you adopt malpractices to amass a good amount for you, your desire to get more, more than more, never comes to an end for this and in this, you end your life without living it healthy.

This is true, it is the need of the life but this is also true that it is not the only need of the life. You can make yourself with the money but this is also true that money can destroy you too. It makes you fight for your food, it makes you fight for your need, but it makes you fight for wealth too. It makes you blind, sometimes with your bad and wrong decision and makes you kill yourself. Money itself is everything, but nothing; it's an illusion that we think so; otherwise all the rich would have been the happiest persons on this earth. But we know this from our heart that, they are not so. They too have the problems as poor man has, the difference is that they don't have money problem.

You can take as assets with you, to buy your needs, to fulfill your requirement, as a fighting tool from your problems and as a power, it is the need to fulfill your dream plans, to make your life run and to believe that importance of money in life, is not important than life. You will get another chance to fulfill your dream but malpractice will sooner or later, lead you to behind the bars, there you won't find proper light, ventilation and your money, for which you did so.

Do fight for your right because if you were not clear then people will write on you, that you are an understood person. Then, you won't get anything in your life; neither money nor status and you are solely responsible for it. Money has a power to attract only those who are greedy, wise people do not run behind it; they make the way so that money flows to them. If you will make a good and healthy environment at your work place, you will find, money inflow has increased but if you will work under pressure or not happy with your job, you won't have money.

Everybody wants to become wealthy, wants to attain power with this, a son is ready to kill his father, a wife is ready to ditch her poor husband, a person is ready to kill anyone for this, an old man at his last, still don't want to leave all this for the peace of his death. We are least interested with death but we are much happy to live for sometime with money. It is always been seen that the money never makes a permanent place for it, it keeps on moving, like anything.

Today we are rich, tomorrow we could be poor and we don't know the cycle of it. So, we should make ourselves clear that if our attitude is positive, our altitude would definitely be high and then we won't have to run behind it, we will find something different in our case. Having much money, we again become mad. It is really shameful for us that single word money and it's meaning has a command on our life. Do use your brain; to come out of this illusion, you will never have the scarcity of money.
